Matt's Weekend Picks: August. 26-28

Alice St. Clair, Serta Amboyer Who states nothing happens about the weekend before Labor Day? (And we are not speaking storm formulations about the New England - a minimum of not within this space.) Nowadays, TV rarely requires a holiday, and the like may be the situation a few days ago. A couple of highlights: Torchwood: Miracle Day (Friday, 10/9c, Starz) If only I possibly could are convinced that last week's terrific episode (Jack's 20's flashback, which went from romantic to disturbing inside a bloody expensive because he was revealed as "the blessing") symbolized coming back to create with this otherwise woefully uneven season of Torchwood. But I am afraid we are back to the current day now, and also the action is equally as absurdly clumsy and also the figures (Rex and Esther particularly) as irritating as always. Still, with only two episodes to visit following this, I'll watch towards the finish. Physician Who (Saturday, 9/8c, BBC America) In much more happy genre news, we resume the crackerjack sixth season (the 2nd starring the wonderful Matt Cruz) by having an outing entitled "Let us Kill Hitler." The search continues for companion Amy's purloined baby Tune Pond (who now that we know to become River Song in her own adult version), using the TARDIS to nineteen thirties Berlin, where (based on the BBCA synopsis) "the Physician [comes] in person using the finest war criminal within the World - and Hitler." Whee! Want more Matt Roush? Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now! William & Catherine - A Royal Romance (Saturday, 9/8c, Hallmark Funnel) Should you must. Take a rest from perusing the button snaps in the Kardashian wedding to look at this inflamed bonbon, the 2nd TV-movie to chart the royal lovebirds' courtship. (Though shot following the wedding, unlike Lifetime's earlier quickie movie, there's still no make an effort to recreate the ceremony.) Noticably for that casting all around the bland couple - Wills is performed by a united states having a full locks, should you be curious - including Victor Garber like a stuffy Prince Charles, Jean Wise like a good-natured Camilla (discuss your creating women!) and Jane Alexander being an abnormally robust, tall Full Elizabeth, playing yard darts and Wii to endear herself towards the commoner who does be princess. MTV Music Video Honours (Sunday, 9/8c, MTV) For just one evening annually, MTV pretends will still be a music funnel, and also the 28th annual extravaganza includes performances from Rhianna (opening the show with "WeInch) - who hopefully leaves the meat dress yourself in the freezer - Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Adele along with other usual suspects. Adding some class towards the evening: living legend Tony Bennett, there to recognition the late Amy Winehouse, with whom he recorded a duet of "Body and Soul" to become launched the following month. Leverage (Sunday, 9/8c, TNT) Wrapping a powerful summer time season - new episodes return November. 27 - they heads to Dubai on Sterling's account to drag off a higher-tech caper throughout an worldwide chess tournament. Successful or unsuccessful, they have recently been guaranteed a fifth year on TNT. True Bloodstream (Sunday, 9/8c, Cinemax) Ongoing one of the most entertaining seasons of the supernatural free-for-all, "all hell breaks loose in Shreveport" (HBO's words) following the witches' ambush in the Tolerance Festival. Even though Bill leads a vampire retaliation from the Moon Goddess Emporium, others (including Sookie, Jason, Jesus and Lafayette) attempt to save Tara and Carol, trapped within. Curb Your Enthusiasm (Sunday, 10/9c, Cinemax) Ray David clashes with Wanda Sykes (who "pre-empts Larry's training schedule," we are told), that is always beneficial for any laugh. Breaking Bad (Sunday, 10/9c, AMC) The strain is constantly on the mount within the summer's most searing drama, following last week's declaration by Bryan Cranston as Wally Whitened that "I'm the risk.Inch Now, he certainly appears some risk - to themself, otherwise to others, because he sways on lawyer Saul and partner-in-crime Jesse in the frustration over the inability to get near his enemy, Gus. Meanwhile, brother-in-law Hank is finally mobile enough to pursue their own accusations, going to Los Pollos Hermanos, where when the fried chicken does not kill you, the boss might just. Absolutely gripping. Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!

New Modern Warfare 3 Trailer Lands

Here? On a movie website? Gracious! It's not everyday that Empire posts a game trailer - a game trailer for a non-movie related gaming franchise, no less - but when it's Modern Warfare 3 we're talking about, how could we not?For those not in the know (for.... some reason), the Modern Warfare franchise is one of the biggest-selling game series of all time, with its last release, CoD: MW2, selling 20 million copies worldwide. Due out November 8, there are literally millions of hardcore gamers anxiously sweating into their sofa divots at the prospect of playing this, the biggest shooty-bang-bang game release (read: first person shooter) since.... well, the last Call Of Duty game. Following straight on from the end of Modern Warfare 2 (SPOILER), The Russian Federation continues to attack the United States, but missions are reported to also take place in England, France, Germany and parts of Africa. This trailer, however, is centred around the gameplay rather than the plot, with Inception-like BRRRAAAAAHMS echoing out of your computer's speakers. Anyway, check it out for yourself, and let us know your thoughts. Our thoughts? Looks ludicrously amazing. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be out November 8

Paul Williams was one of the biggest stars of the 1970s. He was everywhere - on The Tonight Show 50 times and appeared on variety shows, sitcoms, game shows and movies from The Love Boat to Phantom of the Paradise. But in the 1980s, he just disappeared. This movie is about what happened when filmmaker Stephen Kessler finds him. Samsara Ron Fricke, USA World Premiere Samsara is a Tibetan word that means “the ever turning wheel of life,” a concept both intimate and vast, the perfect subject for filmmakers Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson whose previous collaborations include Chronos and Baraka. Samsara takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation that spans the globe on a journey of the soul. Through powerful images pristinely photographed in 70mm and a dynamic music score, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of the nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet. Sarah Palin - You Betcha! Nick Broomfield and Joan Churchill, United Kingdom World Premiere Nick Broomfield’s quest for the real Sarah Palin involves battling the icy snows of Alaska in mid-winter to speak to the school friends, family, and Republican colleagues that in previous days gave their heart, soul and belief to the charismatic, charming, intoxicating ex-hockey mom. But it’s not all plain sailing. People are frightened to talk; Wasilla makes Twin Peaks look like a walk in the park. It’s a devout evangelical community - 76 churches with a population of only 6 thousand, and the Crystal meth capital of Alaska. Broomfield brings his celebrated wit and determination to cracking her story. The Story of Film: An Odyssey Mark Cousins, United Kingdom World Premiere Filmed on four continents over six years, this epic 15-hour documentary tells the story of innovation in the movies based on the acclaimed book of the same title by Mark Cousins. Featuring exclusive interviews with legendary filmmakers like Stanley Donen and Abbas Kiarostami, The Story of Film: An Odyssey is a passionate, cinematic journey across 11 decades of cinema, and a thousand films. The Tall Man Tony Krawitz, Australia International Premiere This is the story of Palm Island, the Australian tropical Paradise where one morning Cameron Doomadgee swore at a policeman and forty-five minutes later lay dead in a watch-house cell. It’s also the story of that policeman, the tall enigmatic Christopher Hurley who prior to Doomadgee’s death had been decorated for his work with aboriginal communities. Based on Chloe Hooper’s award winning book, The Tall Man explores one of Australia’s most sensational cases of culture clash and the haunting moral puzzle at its core. Undefeated Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin, USA International Premiere In 2004, football coach Bill Courtney took on the daunting job of coaching at Manassas High School in inner-city Memphis, where players are more likely to wind up in jail than in college. The Manassas Tigers were perennial whipping boys of the league, bereft of victories, funds, and morale. Courtney recruited a group of freshmen to turn things around, and in their first season they got creamed. But with each passing year they won more games and more respect. At the start of the season in 2009, Courtney set a goal: to win the first play-off game in the school’s 110-year history. Urbanized Gary Hustwit, U.S./United Kingdom World Premiere Director Gary Hustwit (Helvetica, Objectified) completes his design film trilogy with Urbanized. Exploring the design of cities with the world’s foremost architects, policymakers and engaged citizens, Urbanized frames a global discussion about how the design of our cities affects our lives. Whores’ Glory Michael Glawogger, Austria/Germany North American Premiere Whores’ Glory is a cinematic triptych on prostitution: three countries, three languages, three religions. In Thailand, women wait for clients behind glass panes, staring at reflections of themselves. In Bangladesh, men go to a ghetto of love to satisfy their unfulfilled desires on indentured girls. And in Mexico, women mix hard drugs with sex labour to avoid facing their own reality. In worlds where the most intimate act has become a commodity, these women have physically and emotionally experienced everything that can happen between a man and a woman. For this they have always received money, but it has not made their lives rich in anything but stories. ###
